Recently I've been giving a lot of thought to the idea of caring for myself, and I don't know if I've been doing enough of it. I'll post again later detailing my thoughts and findings, but for now just the actionables.
One of the conclusions I came to was that social media is not something I do for myself, but something I do for others. By definition, social media promotes the idea of valuing the external opinions over your own. A like on your own post carries the same weight as everyone else's, and that's just not how life is supposed to be.
“Success” on social media reflects an unhealthy way of defining self worth, and it's a definition I've used for far too long. There's plenty more to say on this, but as I prefer not to write much further into the wee hours of the morning, I shall refrain from sharing the details.
Long story short, I'm cutting back on activities that I don't do “for me” and social media makes the top of the list. I'm giving the detox trend a shot, and maybe you should too.
Be happy, be healthy.
How to reach me / Detox structure (I'm cutting back on social media, not on being social):
By Phone: Text and call notifications are on. This is the best way to reach me.
Email: I check this maybe once or twice a day. Pretty reliable but slow. Notifications for “important” messages.
Snapchat: Will keep up with streaks once or twice a day, won't be checking DMs. No notifications.
Instagram: Not checking it, using exclusively for photography from here on out. No notifications.
YouTube: Limiting watchtime to 2 hours a day. No notifications.
Discord: Keeping installed because it sounds better than phone calls for some people, won't be checking it. No notifications.
Twitter: Uninstalled
Imgur: Uninstalled
Reddit: Uninstalled
Facebook: Uninstalled
